JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Overview:

The Geriatric Information Specialist (GIS) is part of a team that staffs an elder information and referral hotline for Boston. We provide telephone consultation, education, and referrals to elder, their families, and those who work with the elderly.

Essential Functions:

Essential Job functions: Duties _______ through _______are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job. All other job duties are secondary functions. [TBD]

  1. Assess and triage telephone calls for eldercare information and services.
  2. Perform preliminary screenings for eligibility to government benefits and programs and make appropriate referrals.
  3. Log in and complete all calls in caller database.
  4. Skillfully use resource databases to locate appropriate resources for callers.
  5. Educate all callers (elders, families, and eldercare professionals) about community services.
  6. Advocate, when needed, on behalf of elders to secure services.
  7. Be an information resource to all direct service staff at the ASAPs.
  8. Attend and participate in training and meetings as designated and perform outreach and other administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Competencies

  1. Knowledge of Boston's neighborhoods, elderly service network, community resources and aging issues.
  2. Must have strong administrative/organizational qualifications, detail oriented and able to produce work in a timely manner.
  3. Sensitivity to elder issues and commitment to maintaining clients at home with dignity.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate in person and by telephone.
  5. Computer experience with the ability to perform data entry and word processing.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee must be able to carry a 15 to 20 pound load
  • The employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Travel:

This position does not require travel.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Gerontology, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with telephone information and referral, assessment and problem solving. Must be able to work with complex calls in a professional manner to bring about resolution of problems.
  • CIRS-A certification preferred but not required.
